InDesign Page Exporter Utility Script

Installation and Usage

Note: Screen shots are created using an Apple® MacBook® Pro. Screen shots will be slightly different for Windows® users.

Description

The Page Exporter Utility (PEU) JavaScript allows users of Adobe’s® InDesign® CS3/CS4/CS5 to create single page PDF files using either a Macintosh® or Windows® computer. Without this Script, one needs to use third party software, plug-in, or manually create single page PDF files. The PEU Script allows all pages to be created with a single execution from the InDesign® document. This process allows PDF files to be created much more efficiently.

The supplied Export_PDFx-1a-2001.joboptions (zip) file allows one to create viable PDF files that meet process through the Pontiac DSC system.

Installation

  1. Download and uncompress InDesign Page Export Utility Script (zip). Place the folder on your desktop. It should contain the following items.
  2. Place the folder named PDF Files Go Here on your Desktop. This will be the destination folder for PDFs exported from InDesign® using this script utility.

Loading the Preset

  1. Launch Adobe InDesign® (CS3, CS4, CS5, CS5.5 or CS6)
  2. Launch Adobe InDesign and from the File menu choose Adobe PDF Presets >Define.

  3. From the Adobe PDF Presets dialog box click Load.

  4. Locate the Export_PDFx-1a-2001.joboptions that you downloaded above (located in the uncompressed folder). Select these joboptions and click open.

  5. After loading the job options click Done. You have now successfully installed the PDF Export job options.

Loading Page Exporter Script

  1. Next open the InDesign Scripts dialog box.
    • InDesign CS3 & CS4 – Window > Automation > Scripts
    • InDesign CS5, CS5.5 & CS6 – Window > Utilities> Scripts
  2. In the Scripts dialog box toggle open the Application/Samples/Javascript folder.
  3. Control+click (Macintosh) or right click (Windows) on any of the listed scripts and select Reveal in Finder (Macintosh) or Reveal in Explorer (Windows) from the drop menu.
  4. A new window opens that contains InDesign’s® Javascript files. From the supplied folder, select PageExporter5Prefs.txt PageExporterUtility5.0.1.jsx in the PEU5 folder and move these files into InDesign’s® Javascript folder.
    move or copy to

Executing Page Exporter Utility Script

  1. From InDesign with a open document open the Script dialog box.
    • InDesign CS3 & CS4 – Window > Automation > Scripts
    • InDesign CS5, CS5.5 & CS6 – Window > Utilities> Scripts
  2. Double-click the PageExporterUtility5.0.1 (The file above it is the preference file. It is grayed out and is not executable.) The following window appears.

    • Base Name: By default, the PEU JavaScript enters the opened InDesign® document’s name here. The information in this field will automatically be placed in the name of the PDF file. Change the text here as needed. In this screen grab, the PDF files created will have “Test” in the file name. The folio of the page is derived from the information that is used in the Pages window. If a page(s) contain a spot color that is going to print, put _pms at the end of the Base Name.
    • Start[-End] Page: If the page range of the InDesign® document is 11-19 (as in the screen grab above), PEU will create PDF files that will be named as follows:
      • 011_Test.pdf
      • 012_Test.pdf
      • 013_Test.pdf
      • 014_Test.pdf
      • 015_Test.pdf
      • 016_Test.pdf
      • 017_Test.pdf
      • 018_Test.pdf
      • 019_Test.pdf
    • Output Directory: The PEU JavaScript preferences have already been modified to point to the PDF FILES GO HERE folder located on the Desktop of your computer. This is the location where PEU will place all PDF files as they are Exported.
    • Note: the export utility numbers each file based off of the InDesign page layout number. The actual printed page number must match/be built on the same page layout number in InDesign, so that the file name number and printed page number matches.
  1. Once the Base Name and the Pages to be Exported are complete, click the OK button. The next window appears. Make the selection from the drop menu as seen below and click the OK button. This selection will only need to be made once. When using PEU again, the preset below will already be selected.
  2. The PEU JavaScript is now being executed and single page PDF files are being created. Once the JavaScript has finished Exporting the selected pages in to PDF files the following message window appears.
  3. Proceed to the PDF FILES GO HERE folder and you will find the PDF files that have been created.
  4. PDF files are now ready to be uploaded to LSC Communications Digital Solution Center.
