Environmental Health and Safety

Employee Leadership Helps Achieve Industry Leading EHS Results.

At LSC Communications, we strive to continuously improve our safety and environmental performance. We do this by ensuring we have the programs, practices, and resources to help us protect our employees and visitors, and in preserving our environment. It means we want to achieve zero injuries and zero environmental incidents.

We start with a corporate EHS Policy applicable to all worldwide locations and that defines how we manage Environmental Health & Safety at LSC Communications.

The results we've seen and the progress we continue to enjoy comes down to a single factor - our people. The employees of LSC Communications understand that safety and environmental protection is part of what each of us is supposed to do every day, every hour on the job. The dedication of our people to their own safety, the safety of their coworkers, and to the environment, is why we've seen higher and higher performance every year.

We won't be satisfied as long as any employee is hurt and we won't stop working to reduce our impact on the environment.

Safety Management Systems

OSHA VPP and OHSAS 18001 specifications guide safety management programs.

Through these management systems, LSC Communications shows our employees and communities that we are a leader in safety and health. Our strong commitment to safety and health is also good business. Our entire industry will benefit as our sites evolve into models of excellence and influence practices industry-wide.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) encourages companies to voluntarily improve their occupational safety and health programs.

Candidates for VPP include companies with:

  • effective safety and health programs
  • injury and/or illness rates lower than the industry average
  • managers and employees who work together to prevent accidents and eliminate hazards

Only companies that demonstrate a commitment to workplace safety and health that goes beyond OSHA standards can participate in VPP.

OSHA assesses applicants against performance-based criteria through a rigorous onsite evaluation by a team of OSHA safety and health experts. Sites that make the grade must submit annual self-evaluations to OSHA and undergo periodic onsite VPP reevaluations to remain in the program.

LSC Communications locations that have received VPP status can be found on our External Certifications page.

About OSHAS 18001

The British Standards Institute (BSI) has developed a safety management system called the Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Specification (OHSAS). This specification gives the requirements for a safety and health management system without stating specific performance criteria. As with ISO 9000 and 14000 systems, this specification provides the framework for continuous improvement.

Sites that pursue OHSAS18001 are those that wish to:

  • use a systems approach to eliminate or minimize risk to employees
  • continuously improve safety and health performance
  • assure and demonstrate to others conformance to our EHS Policy
  • have an independent third-party certify its management system

LSC Communications locations that have received OHSAS18001 certification can be found on our External Certifications page.
